A Fashion Label Wants to Change How People Think about ‘Made in Indonesia’

The students taking part in Wharton Global Youth Program’s many summer programs are often aspiring innovators, if not already established entrepreneurs. When we got to know Cornellius Suhartono on Wharton’s campus in recent months, first during Leadership in the Business World in Philadelphia and later in the 2022 Essentials of Innovation program in San Francisco, we wanted to learn more about his fashion label Kine (@kinejkt). Turns out, Cornel is curious about many things, including the technologies fueling Web3. Before he flew home to Jakarta, Indonesia, Cornel sat down for a conversation about Kine, NFTs, a hard lesson about trusting adults in business, and some of his most memorable moments learning with Global Youth this summer.

Wharton Global Youth: Welcome to Future of the Business World, the podcast featuring youth innovators from around the world. I’m Diana Drake with the Wharton Global Youth Program at the Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania.

This summer, Wharton Global Youth has welcomed hundreds of high school students back to the Wharton School to participate in our dynamic business and finance programs. Today’s guest has had the unique experience of studying on both coasts with us in recent weeks, as a student in our Leadership in the Business World program on Wharton’s Philadelphia campus, as well as in our new Essentials of Innovation program on Wharton’s campus in San Francisco.

Cornellius “Cornel” Suhartono is a 17-year-old from Jakarta, Indonesia. He is going to dazzle us with details of his clothing line, the metaverse, his coast-to-coast adventures, and more.

Cornel, thank you for joining us on Future of the Business World!

Cornel Suhartono: Hi Ms. Drake. I’m happy to be here. I just finished my lecture with Professor [Tyler] Wry here in San Francisco, so I’m happy to talk.

Wharton Global Youth Program: You describe yourself as a young Indonesian fashion enthusiast. What captivates you about fashion?

Cornel: Something that I really like about fashion is that it’s a way for people to express themselves. I view fashion as an art. I think it’s an art you can wear, a statement piece you can express to your friends and family.

Wharton Global Youth: Tell me all about your clothing line, Kine? When did you start it? You say it is about helping teenagers become the best versions of themselves. What do you mean by that?

Cornel: Kine is a fashion line that I run and I’ve been working on it since late November 2020. We officially launched on June 4. When I talk about helping teenagers become the best versions of themselves it’s because with Kine every collection is different. We don’t have a specific genre of fashion like other brands that are specific to streetwear or Y2K. For Kine, every single collection is always a different theme. It caters to not just a specific segment of teenagers, it’s for literally everyone. Even if you’re not a teen, a lot of my customers are 30 or 40-year-olds who want to embrace their versions of their youth with Kine.

I first started because I’m from an international school in Indonesia. International students weren’t proud [about] local Indonesian products. It was very rare to see Indonesians that come from international schools wearing local products. They think that if it’s a local Indonesian product that it’s probably fake or copying another brand. But that’s absolutely not true. People think that just because a product’s from Indonesia that the quality is bad. Little do they know that big fashion brands actually have manufacturers in Indonesia. So, when I first started Kine that was my mission. I wanted to get people in my school to wear my brand. It’s the first step for international students to wear Indonesian products. I took a lot of time designing and finally, now we’re here. A lot of people wear the brand in my school and now other brands are starting to follow. It’s a good trend to see.

Wharton Global Youth: How do you sell it? Do you sell it through Instagram? Online?

Cornel: Most of our sales are on Instagram. We also have a website. In Indonesia, most people love Instagram so most of our sales are from direct messages. We also had a pop-up in one of Indonesia’s most prominent fashion exhibitions called Urban Sneaker Society. I managed to get a booth there. We were the youngest brand to be there. All the other brands had been in business for four or five years, even decades. We were very happy to be the newest fashion brand in the exhibition and we actually sold out. We sold out of all of our stuff there.

Wharton Global Youth: You mentioned your affinity for art. Do you design your clothing?

Cornel: I love art. I love James Turrell and all the modern artists. I’m also a photographer. Something about me is that I can’t draw. I’m a really bad drawer. I can’t paint. I appreciate it, but I just can’t do it. I designed my first few designs in notability. It’s an app to take notes from lectures, but I use it to draw sketches. I have a lot of mood boards in my iPad, so I just sketch, sketch, sketch. They’re very, very bad. I outsource my designs to freelancers. I would have an idea and a draft for what I want in a specific piece and they would professionally finalize it digitally.

Wharton Global Youth:  You are currently in California participating in Wharton Global Youth’s first ever Essentials of Innovation program on Wharton’s San Francisco campus. What have you been learning about innovation and how will you apply some of this new intel to your own entrepreneurial ventures?

Cornel: By the way, I love this program. It’s very fun and very different. You get to know a lot about the city, your peers, faculty. Two main points about innovation that are very valuable for everyone who is interested in business. The first thing is that Professor Wry said to not let your emotions go over your logic. [That resonates with me]. Even with my fashion brand, there were times when I would be too emotionally connected to a product or design. I remember that there was one sweater that I loved so much and I put so much effort in. It took eight months of manufacturing it because there were [trials and errors] and the process took so long. In my brain, I knew it was out of season and not the trend anymore, but because I was emotionally connected to it I wanted to sell it so badly. And I did sell it and not surprisingly we did not sell out. It was pretty hard to sell it. Now, we sold that piece. But back then it took so much effort and time. That was a great lesson I learned for myself and from Professor Wry. Don’t let your emotions go over your logic.

Second thing he mentioned was that people that are beginning to create their own startups should focus on their knowledge and expertise, or find people with knowledge and expertise. A lot of times people create a product and a business because they’re passionate about it, which is crucial. But what they sometimes overlook is knowledge and expertise. You need to have knowledge and expertise on the certain business you’re developing for it to succeed. Without that, it gets tricky and oftentimes it will fail. Professor Wry deeply explored that in class.

Wharton Global Youth: You also participated in our Leadership in the Business World program this summer on Philadelphia’s Wharton campus. What were your greatest takeaways about leadership?

Cornel: Yeah, I miss LBW.  Our professor was Flavio [Serapiao]. For the entire three weeks, there was one thing that was very important, not just in business but in life. That one thing he always talks about is empathy. He explained that even in business, empathy is very crucial. And he also demonstrated research and evidence that with more empathy, shareholders will benefit from that. You will get more sales with empathy. Treat people [well]. Be nice. Especially in business and your team; you have to care for your employees, your team, your partners, your boss. Empathy is important and something you should focus on.

Wharton Global Youth: I’m a huge proponent of talking about emotional intelligence, as well as IQ. I’m glad you brought that up. I’m going to pivot here and go away from empathy and more toward the future of finance. I’ve heard you are an NFT enthusiast. Have you invested in one or more non-fungible tokens? Tell us about that?

Cornel: Around the end of 2020, my uncle who was really into physical art sent me this article about NFTs. He was talking about it. I thought it was kind of stupid. Why would people invest in pictures when anyone could screenshot them? So, then that led me to deep research about the technology. It’s about blockchain technology and cryptocurrency. It’s very fun.

The first NFT I bought was this gif of a person swinging. Back then, the NFT craze was actual art. Not those profile pictures of those apes that you see on Twitter, but actual art, but digitalized. I was focusing on that. I bought my first NFT, but the next week I lost my money from that. So, I guess it was a lesson for me. Then, I had a break because I [thought] NFTs were a scam.

Wharton Global Youth: Back up a minute. How did you end up losing your money in a week?

Cornel: I used my own money and it was $900. I thought it was such a steal because the NFT went for $1,000 the day before and I thought I was going to make so much money because I was buying it cheaper than the secondary market. Then I bought it and the next day it went to $980. Then I checked the price each day and it went down, down and down. I guess that connects to Professor Wry’s lesson to not get emotional. I learned to not get emotional over an NFT and just think logically. I learned the hard way that it’s better to lose a bit of money than a lot of money.

Wharton Global Youth: Did that turn you off of NFTs or did you get smarter about it?

Cornel: I took a break for about eight months and I saw a huge NFT craze of bored apes. I thought, ‘Oh my God. This again?’ When I first started my NFT journey, it was mainly digital pictures of actual art. This time it was profile pictures of apes and pixelated people. I thought it was interesting because it was all about marketing. I did a lot of research, especially because I was traumatized by my past NFTs. I started to purchase another NFT. What I learned is that NFTs don’t just give you value of money, it gave me a value of community. I got one NFT and then because I had knowledge on the field, I was able to access a broader community of NFT enthusiasts in Indonesia. I was able to connect with people.

As time moved on, my friends in the NFT space started to make their own NFTs. I used to be able to purchase them before anyone else. That gave me a huge advantage. One of my friends, who is in his late 20s, made this NFT that a lot of people in this podcast might know. It’s called Karafuru. When he told me about it, I thought it was an amazing NFT. I talked to him and I invested in one before everyone else did. I purchased it for $200 or $300, then it went up to a spike of $15,000. I had a picture of an orangutan [bored apes] and you’re telling me that [this other NFT] is worth $15,000? I was shocked. Because I had that NFT, I was able to connect with other people in the community. My priority with NFTs now is not to buy and NFT and flip it to make money, but rather getting NFTs to create a network. Right now, NFTs are still in the early stage. I think it’s vital to use this as an advantage to connect with who I think might be the leaders of the NFT market in the future.

Wharton Global Youth: You are already involved in what has come to be called Web3. The broader vision for Web3 is that blockchains and digital assets like NFTs can create more open and decentralized foundations for online activity. What excites you about this new reality and the opportunities it provides?

Cornel: There are a lot of opportunities in the Web3 space. The problem is that when people think of Web3, they just think of those apes. It’s always the NFT apes. It’s way deeper than that. For example, I’m interested in the blockchain technology and the NFT technology. With NFTs and blockchain, you are able to transfer a certain amount of money in a matter of seconds. It’s way faster than a bank and it’s decentralized. There’s also this thing with royalties. NFT owners make money by selling the NFT to the secondary market. Each time that person resells that NFT, the [owner] gets a royalty. That’s what I’m interested in and it can be achieved with blockchain technology. It’s called a smart contract, where you can transfer money in a matter of seconds and you can split it into royalties in a matter of seconds. It’s very efficient.

Wharton Global Youth: What are your future plans for Kine?

Cornel: My future plans for Kine right now are that I’m trying to go national. Right now I’m focusing locally on just Indonesia, my hometown. We’re trying to expand to Southeast Asia, Singapore, Malaysia and get the market there. And potentially we also want to expand in the U.S. because the culture here is that there are a lot of teenagers who are into fashion and exploring their sense of fashion. One of my priorities is to go worldwide and international.

The second thing with Kine is that I just wanted to be an example for other teenagers that, hey, age is just a number. Just because I was 16 or 15 when I started my line, it shows an example that people my age or even younger than me can make their own ventures and businesses. A lot of times I talk to people and they say they have an amazing idea, but they’re still in school and just 16. I don’t have time for that and I don’t think people will look up to me or respect me. I want Kine to be an example that it is possible for other teenagers to follow through with their passions and make ventures out of it.

Wharton Global Youth: What has been your biggest challenge with Kine?

Cornel: My biggest challenge was definitely finding adults that you could trust. When Kine first started, my first collection went so well and everything sold out. The quality was good. And then, [for my second collection] I had this one manufacturer in Jakarta. She was an adult. I talked to her and said, ‘Hey, I love your products. I want to make more.’ I ordered about $8,000 worth of products that I wanted to manufacture. She sent me a sample. It was perfect. I said, ‘Okay, let’s manufacture all of this.’ Then, when I received the finished products, every single piece had an error. The printing was not professionally done. The tags were everywhere. The quality control was so bad. Keep in mind that I paid a bit more money for them to do quality control. Even then, so very bad. Obviously, I couldn’t launch all these products. One thing I learned here was building trust with your manufacturers is something you should not overlook. At that time, I thought everyone was a professional in the business space. But in reality, not everyone is as professional as you may think. When I talked to the manufacturer [and asked her] if I could return [the clothes] and have her fix them, she said no. They can do that and they have the right to do that because I didn’t sign an agreement. That’s another lesson I learned. Make agreements with your partners before you do anything.

I was so sad. We broke even with our first collection, but considering the fact that I had to cover about $8,000 worth of goods that I could not sell, we went way back down [for our second collection]. Those two months I was really sad and did not know what to do. I even considered quitting. I thought about it and [realized] I had to make money back to break even or to get close to breaking even. I worked and worked. I didn’t plan to give up. That’s my thing, I’m never going to give up because I’m a competitive person. That’s when I reached out to Urban Sneaker Society, the fashion exhibition in Indonesia. I said, ‘Hey, I’m 16 but I can provide you products that are way better than your expectations.’ They gave me a shot. From that, I invested a bit more to make more goods. Obviously not as much as I had planned to do because I lost a lot of money from there. And thankfully, we sold out! We sold out in two days.

Wharton Global Youth: One question I like to ask all our guests on Future of the Business World is if you could change one thing in the world, what would it be?

Cornel: People’s mindset would be one thing I’d want to change. The world would be much more efficient, better if everyone’s mindset is to be more what LBW taught me – to be empathetic. A lot of people overlook that. Everyone knows being nice is good, but they don’t take that seriously, especially in the business space.

Wharton Global Youth: Let’s wrap up with our lightning round:

One of the best new technologies to emerge during the pandemic?

Cornel: I still think the NFT and blockchain technology.

Wharton Global Youth: Something about Indonesia that you want everyone to know?

Cornel: Personally I think that Indonesia has the best food ever. We have thousands of islands in Indonesia. It’s an archipelago. So, each island has its own food. You can imagine how many different kinds of food they provide.

Wharton Global Youth: Your favorite Wharton San Francisco memory so far?

Cornel: Definitely visiting Salesforce Tower. It was really fun. We had the opportunity to go there, talk to the people who are part of Salesforce, and we even went to the top of the tower, which I believe is the tallest tower in San Francisco. We had an amazing view of the city.

Wharton Global Youth: Define entrepreneurship in five words or less?

Cornel: Making life easier and happier.

Wharton Global Youth: You are starting your own talk show. Who is your first guest and why?

Cornel: Definitely Robert Greene. Robert Greene is an author and if you haven’t read him, you definitely should. He’s amazing. He wrote The 48 Laws of Power and Laws of Human Nature. His books helped me throughout the different pathways in life, from relationships with family, friends and even in business. He’s very helpful and he inspired me. I would ask him what triggered his epiphany of tricks, which he wrote in his books. How did he come up with these tips and laws? To me, they are actual laws. They work every single time. I feel like he has the laws for life. [I would also ask him] something about his personal life. That’s something I’m always interested in.

  1. When I tuned in to Cornellius Suhartono’s podcast, I immediately felt a sense of camaraderie with him.

    Cornellius and I have a lot in common. While he doodles, I draw, and we both enjoy art as a form of self-expression. My parents are both Indonesian, but I was born in the United States, so we share a common heritage. We are both young entrepreneurs, with Cornel operating in the fashion industry and me specializing in tropical plants.

    His experience building “Kine” in Indonesia struck a chord, reminding me of the difficulties I encountered while attempting to launch my own tropical plant business during the COVID-19 outbreak. I learned a few things from him and the business world, including the admonition to not “let your emotions go over your logic.” Cornel spent too much time on a sweater that was out of style and out of season, while I first focused on growing Alocasia simply because I loved its leaf patterns. Some died during the acclimation process, but those that survived became difficult to sell because they attracted spider mites. I lost $300 because I had let my emotions take precedence over reason.

    “A lot of times, people create a product and a business because they’re passionate about it, which is crucial. But what they sometimes overlook is knowledge and expertise,” Cornel added. I first started selling cacti and succulents when I was in fifth grade. As a result of the COVID-19 outbreak, there was a global thirst for tropical plants, with many sellers charging exorbitant prices. I saw Indonesia, Thailand, and Ecuador dominate the tropical plant industry. Therefore, I saw a tremendous business opportunity here. I wanted to make them more affordable and accessible to the U.S. market. Tropical plants differ from cacti and succulents, so I launched the business without the necessary knowledge, competence, or infrastructure. As a result, I spent countless hours on YouTube, Google, and Facebook groups learning about tropical plants.

    In addition, Cornel noted, “Building trust with your manufacturers is something you should not overlook.” In the beginning, creating a network of renowned nurseries was a challenge. As a result of being defrauded, I made several blunders that cost me $2,000. Later, I discovered that the “nurseries” that I wired the money to were just middlemen who did not own the businesses. To protect myself from scams, I used PayPal, enlisted the help of my extended family in Indonesian to inspect the nursery, and sought advice from the plant group on reputable nurseries.

    Cornel loves art but cannot draw or paint, so he commissions it to be done professionally. At the start of my business, I was a “jack of all trades, master of none.” Being a “jack of all trades” taught me a lot, but it was strenuous for me. To keep my business afloat, I outsourced or automated time-consuming tasks. Growing baby plants takes a lot of time and effort, so I bought more mature plants that are ready to be propagated. I found a Facebook group for greenhouse hacks and learned how to automate the humidity, lights, and fan. Since the plants were inside a greenhouse, I could water them every two weeks instead of every 3-5 days.

    Cornel never let failure intimidate him. In the podcast, he discusses purchasing NFTs, losing money, and believing it was a fraud. Instead of giving up, he conducted thorough research and discovered that NFTs are not just about making money or buying and selling things. Instead, they are about building a community, connecting with people, and forming networks. After losing almost $2,500 of my initial investment, I was on the verge of giving up. However, remembering why I started this business keeps me motivated to this day. In the beginning, it was not about making money. Doing something that you truly enjoy and sharing it with others is the driving force behind my business. Plants are like works of art; no two are the same. They are living things, and when you cultivate them out of love, the people who receive them will feel the same way.

    As a lifelong lover of the arts, I was inspired by Cornel’s podcast to design and launch my clothing line. Cornel aims to globalize “Kine.” After researching this industry, Cornel has a couple of options. Nowadays, everyone can become an artist. Instead of outsourcing his design, he may choose to create his shirt using an app like Canva or Over. Previously, Cornel had only sold his shirts on Instagram and at fashion exhibitions in Indonesia. By selling his t-shirts on online marketplaces in the U.S. such as Etsy, Redbubble, and Merch by Amazon, he can expand his business globally. He can form partnerships with respected “print-on-demand” businesses such as Printful and Printify instead of being left with unsold inventory. By doing so, he can streamline the whole process, from design to production to order fulfillment.

    In conclusion, everything revolves around the magical number 3. There are three things that we have in common: the love of art, Indonesia, and being young entrepreneurs. Three things that I have learned from him are people, purpose, and passion. Resilience, self-confidence, and inventiveness were the three attributes that contributed to his success. The three things I can suggest to him to globalize his fashion business are an easy-to-use design tool, an online selling platform besides Instagram, and a print-on-demand company.

    Ultimately, “making life easier and happier” is at the heart of what it means to be an entrepreneur, exactly as Cornel said.

  2. Cornel’s story about Kine was definitely an inspiring one for young entrepreneurs with similar aspirations! As a fellow student who studies in an international school, I’ve also seen peers favoring foreign brands. His idea to get rid of people labeling locally made clothing as “sketchy” or “fake” is extremely relatable, as I know many of my peers would prefer Adidas or Balenciaga over Chinese brands. However, from my perspective, Cornel isn’t preserving his original message of “Made in Indonesia” enough in his long-term vision. Despite him mentioning that his peers enjoy his clothing brand, it’s possible that’s because they find it fascinating that their classmate is crafting creative work instead of the fact that it’s a local business. To keep promoting Indonesian pride amongst teenagers, both local and international, I would suggest that Cornel focus on one unique style and theme surrounding his home country’s culture.

    First, since this project was initially targeted toward international students who prefer bigger brands, Cornel should stay consistent with a focus on Indonesian culture or aspects for each collection. For example, he mentioned that Indonesia is an archipelago; perhaps he could use the outline of these islands as a design for his shirts? He also mentioned that each island has its own cultural food. Adding Indonesian food as an element to Kine would for sure attract foodies, leading them to discover more about local cuisine! Moreover, after some research, I’ve discovered that there are some well-known Indonesian artifacts like stilt houses, shadow puppets, and batik fabric. If Cornel manages to integrate these designs into his brand, even if his classmates are just purchasing from Kine because of the hype that someone they know has his own business, they’ll still be constantly reminded of how this is an Indonesian product. Another idea is for Cornel to add “Made in Indonesia” or a slogan containing the country name into his clothing. Usually this is only printed onto the tag, but if he incorporates a slogan like this more prominently into the front or back of the clothing, people couldn’t miss it. An example that I’ve seen here in Shanghai is Li-Ning, a Chinese sportswear and sports equipment brand. In recent years they’ve started producing t-shirts and hoodies with only four big Chinese characters on them that translate to “China Li-Ning.” This design rapidly became popular, and it’s a lot of people’s first exposure to the brand. When one sees people wearing these shirts on the street, their immediate reaction would be “Oh, that’s the Chinese brand Li-Ning;” after all, what else could be depicted from those four simple characters? Cornel’s Kine could follow a similar formula. With a trendy and a snappy slogan containing “Indonesia,” people might start embracing the local products with ease.

    Additionally, by focusing on a specific style, Kine would leave a lasting impression on people and even boost business. When aesthetics switch up so often, it’s easy for people to forget about what Kine is about. Take the fast-fashion brand H&M as an example: it provides various options and collections, and although that does indeed gather a wide range of customers, it results in scattered trends and weak impressions. It’s difficult to remember what kind of clothes H&M provides, and it’s normal to question if the company will be consistent in their production. Say, in one collection they focus on a minimalist style, and in the next they change it to sporty clothing—how would one be sure that their t-shirts are qualified for jogging? What if the material is too thick for sports? The same could apply to Kine: if Cornel doesn’t focus on one style, people will eventually move on and go back to more specialized brands such as Nike or Louis Vuitton, which don’t change up their bases at all.

    Considering everything, Kine is a great business, and Cornel has done so much at his age already. If he could expand his base while staying true to his vision of building a good reputation for Indonesia-made products, I wouldn’t be surprised to see his business thrive even more on top of the sturdy base he has already created!

      Thank you for providing thought-provoking ideas on Cornel’s company Kline. I enjoyed reading about your fashion advice. However, I think that the execution of your advice must coexist with the addressing of deep-rooted misconceptions if Kline is to foster pride within the Indonesian community and the rest of the world. Within Indonesia, there are hundreds of thousands of micro to large fashion companies already in existence. There is an even larger amount of talented and skilled Indonesian fashion designers. Yet nearly none of these fashion brands are known on an international basis. So why is that?

      A common critique that consumers have of clothing made from Indonesia and several other countries in Asia are the quality of the products. However, their perspective uses only the basis of the price of the product, associating higher prices with higher quality. As production costs are lower in these countries, many people, therefore, view these products as low quality. However, there exists an error in this logic due to the system of fashion companies. While the “made in” tag means that the material sourcing and manufacturing happen in the listed country, the quality of the material and the process in which the clothing is produced is actually determined by the fashion company. The manufacturer then follows the statements of the binding contract to produce the desired clothing.

      So when consumers purchase low quality clothing, it is actually unfair to pin the blame on the manufacturer. Instead, they should recognize that the fashion company itself had decided to save money on the production end and the manufacturers had only followed the contract. I believe that such a point is vital for both Cornel and the rest of us to promote through either our platforms or just in our day-to-day lives. For example, celebrities have the social prominence to influence the next “in” for fashion trends, even elevating brands to the status of “high fashion.” Only through a collective effort as Panitnan mentioned with the soft power of Korea and Japan, can the “Made in Indonesia” tag as Ruosia proposed evoke pride in place of false stereotypes.

      Further, such shifts in perception will also grant local communities a greater voice to speak up against inhumane labor practices. One case of such exploitation that I recently read about was with luxury brand Loro Piana. While a Loro Piana can cost upward of $15000, the compensation for the Lucana community has sharply decreased in the past decade. Similar cases happen in Indonesia and other parts of the world. Corporations recognize the intense job competition within a country and exploit people for their own profit. This, combined with the lax labor laws of many countries, leaves many people with only two options: Work for extremely low wages or not have any source of income.

      As of now, many fashion companies, especially fast fashion companies, have continued insufficiently compensating their workers due to a fear of losing customers from the heightened price of products. However, as CEO of Remake Ayesha Barenblat said about the wage situation in Bangladesh, “The increase [of clothing prices] after five years in Bangladesh is so miniscule that brands can easily absorb the cost and the cost to consumers would be negligible.”1 So, it has really come down to which large fashion company will take the first step towards ethicality. Although the company may lose a couple customers in the very beginning, the values of the world are shifting, and the industry must follow if it is to survive. The recent boycott of Shein and Zara demonstrates a new wave of thinking: A couple cents or dollars off a product isn’t worth overlooking and indirectly supporting inhumanities for.

      As Thomas Winberry, a finance professor at Wharton, says, “With small to moderate increases in the minimum wage, ‘the wages of initially low-wage workers immediately increase and over time their employment increases as well.’’2 But, this push for even a small increase, let alone a moderate increase, needs, once again, a collective effort to create the difference. As demonstrated by the Loro Piana scandal, wages aren’t just low, they are becoming even lower. Only now that the press has revealed and addressed this issue, is the company potentially changing their ways. For many of these companies, it is unfortunately not moral scruples but rather the social pressure created by their consumers that spur a change in their business practices.

      I hope to see Cornel use his company to promote ethical entrepreneurship throughout Indonesia and the rest of the world. As Kine grows in popularity, Cornel can use the platforms on which it sells such as Instagram, to spread messages on the impacts of exploitative practices on workers and the significance of companies providing living, not just minimum wages. Not only will a growing awareness encourage individuals and groups to take action for global human welfare, it will also begin to dissolve some of the moral barriers that consumers have with buying products from certain countries as the exploitation becomes less prevalent. As a result, the market will then grow, further improving the quality of life within these countries.

      As nearly two years have passed since the publication of this article, I would love to hear from Cornel on how Kine has developed. I applaud Cornel for courageously entering one of the hardest industries and yet also promoting such a profound message through his initiative.

  3. As a fashion enthusiast myself, I can totally share Cornel’s sentiment. Fashion is more than the clothes you wear, it is an expression and is much an art as a painting or sculpture. I, myself, am of Southeast Asian roots. I grew up and studied in Thailand for most of my life, and like Cornel, I went to an international school. I must first say that this viewpoint is definitely not unique to international school students but it is common in Thai society as a whole: we look down on local products, yet glorify anything from abroad.

    At some point, looking “Korean” or “Japanese” became a compliment and looking “Thai” became an insult. It is similar in fashion. Brands that cater to the Korean aesthetic are more popular, considered more trendy or more fashionable. Local brands are considered cheap or fake. Undeniably, this is attributed to Korea and Japan’s soft power, utilizing entertainment like K-Pop and Anime to create a certain influence on the wider world. Soft power is powerful—its impact is anything but soft. Its effects are hard-reaching. Being able to wield soft power effectively can completely revive a country, the same way it had done to South Korea after the Asian Financial Crisis.

    Listening to this podcast, I have grown to admire Cornel’s mindset. He has a passion that he is willing to stand by, and a strong faith in what he believes in. It takes a high level of commitment and perseverance to create a successful brand. While I enjoy fashion, I have yet to find the courage to pursue it more than a hobby. Unfortunately my designs have still remained the school project I did for a week and never looked at again. I had always thought it was too much of an unstable option for me to pursue, however, listening to Cornel’s story might just be the push I need. Being able to move forward from an unexpected setback with the bad quality control and only breaking even in the first collection is not easy. There is a certain sense of dread that comes with failure, yet he did not let it affect him. Rather than quitting, he chose to move forward and learn from his mistakes. This, I believe, is the quality needed to be successful in business and in life. Being able to get back up from failure and having faith in yourself is the mindset everybody needs.

What particularly resonates with me is Cornel’s commitment to using fashion as a means of self-expression and his drive to challenge misconceptions about local products. His emphasis on empathy, as learned from Wharton’s Leadership in the Business World program, and his thoughtful approach to integrating logic over emotion in business decisions are values that I deeply admire.
    As someone who loves fashion, I can relate to one of the biggest challenges of online shopping: the disconnect between how clothes look on a website and how they look on me. Somtimes, the color clashes with my skin tone, or the fit is too loose or tight, and the process of making returns can be a hassle. Cornel’s vision for Kine could greatly benefit from integrating augmented reality (AR) technology for virtual try-ons. This feature would allow customers to visualize how the clothes look on them before purchasing, significantly reducing the frustration of mismatched expectations and return processes. This innovation would enhance the online shopping experience, making it more personalized and satisfying.
    Incorporating sustainable and eco-friendly practices into Kine’s production process could also significantly enhance the brand. Most young shoppers today, including myself, are very vocal and aware about climate ethics, especially when it comes to shopping. Personally, I always look for brands that advocate and make it known that they are using sustainable materials and being conscious about their carbon footprint. By incorporating sustainable materials such as organic cotton or recycled fabrics, Kine could not only appeal to environmentally-conscious consumers and the younger generation but also differentiate itself in a crowded market. Additionally, implementing transparent supply chain practices and emphasizing fair labor standards could build further trust and loyalty among customers.
    By embracing sustainability and cutting-edge technology, Kine can not only continue to celebrate Indonesian craftsmanship but also lead the way in responsible and innovative fashion.

  5. Listening to this article made me realize fashion is a true form of art. Cornel conveyed his experiences, and ideas into a piece of clothing, teaching me valuable lessons about passion and mindset that I couldn’t have discovered on my own. It was intriguing learning about the many different entrepreneurial experiences that Cornel has experienced, such as attending the Wharton Business program or even getting into NFT’s. His company, Kine has the potential to change the way people view clothing.

    Here is where my idea comes in. Cornel says that he wants to expand to other countries including the US, and I think that is a brilliant move. To make this more impactful, I suggest launching a limited edition collection, similar to Supreme and other luxury brands. Creating hype around an exclusive drop by using Instagram and Tik Tok could positively impact your whole company. These platforms are where the new generation lives and breathes trends, especially when it comes to fashion, sleek designs and limited edition merch.

    The scarcity of the collection would drive demand, and the clean unique designs would resonate with fashion forward individuals who love owning something exclusive. It is all about tapping into the sense of FOMO (Fear of missing out) and creating a buzz that Kine’s U.S. debut is not just a launch, but a cultural moment.
