Empowerment 2021: Advice from 11 Leaders We Met This Past Year

While 2020 was a challenging year, it was also a time to reflect – and innovate. The Wharton Global Youth Program at the Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania, did lots of both as our team devised new ways to connect with high school students around the world, even while we could not meet the top teams on the 8th Floor of Wharton’s Huntsman Hall in May for our annual Investment Competition Global Finale, or hold our high school summer courses on Wharton’s Philadelphia campus starting in June.

Still, the learning continued through this very different year.

So, we have pulled together select quotes from some of the innovators and experts we invited into our online platforms in 2020. In most cases, you can follow the links to listen to, watch or read the full interviews. Enjoy this clearinghouse of great advice for the new year on leadership, life, business education and careers. We give you Empowerment 2021:

“If you’re interested in investing in stocks, start by thinking about businesses that you like or admire and why that’s the case. We engage with a lot of businesses every day in our own lives. When it comes to having an impact on society, “One of the mistakes I see is that there is an arrogance that can come with business. People think, ‘Well, If you only had a business mindset, of course you could solve that problem.’ Not true. These are not easy problems to solve. You need to understand the issues. If you’re really interested in gender and women’s rights, for example, then make sure you learn about sexism and are taking gender-theory classes and are studying gender dynamics in countries around the world. When I was in high school, I thought I had it all figured out. I was launching ventures. None of them were successful.   1. Advice from all these leaders is truly inspiring, every single one full of wise wisdom and experience. Jack Abraham’s quote is one that stood out to me in particular. The quote, “Having your back against a wall forces ingenuity and creative solutions. When bad things happen to you, when you are able, try to realize why this ultimately could be good for you. Pick your head up and find a better path forward” is one that resonates deeply, offering a perspective on how adversity and challenges can be transformative experiences even if it may not seem like it. In the ups and downs of life, it is easy to feel overwhelmed and constrained, as though our options have been narrowed down to almost nothing. However, Abraham’s words shed light on a hidden potential that lies within such situations – the potential for ingenuity and problem-solving.

    When confronted with challenging circumstances, the natural response is to seek a way out, to find a solution that brings relief and respite. Yet, as Abraham suggests, it is precisely in these moments of feeling cornered that our minds are compelled to operate at their most creative and resourceful levels. The necessity of finding a way forward despite the odds allows us to think beyond the ordinary, to explore uncharted avenues of problem-solving. This demand for inventive solutions often results in the discovery of paths that would have remained hidden in more comfortable times. It demonstrates the remarkable human ability to adapt, evolve, and innovate, even when circumstances seem overwhelming.

    However, the quote goes beyond highlighting the power of creative thinking. It encourages a fundamental shift in our perception of adversity. Abraham suggests that behind every negative experience, there exists the potential for positive outcomes. This perspective does not dismiss the real challenges and pain that difficulties bring, but it invites us to recognize the silver linings that can emerge over time. Adversity, while undoubtedly difficult, often serves as a form of personal growth, fostering resilience, self-awareness, and an expanded capacity for empathy.

    In our lives, it is often the most trying moments that become turning points, propelling us to success and becoming the best versions of ourselves. The acknowledgment that adversity can be a catalyst for positive change can allow us to confront hardships with greater courage and optimism. This belief in the potential for growth, the ability to rise above setbacks, to avoid being defined by challenges, and to actively seek avenues that lead to growth and progress.

    The phrase “pick your head up and find a better path forward” reflects the heart of resilience. As they say, rejection is always redirection which can be applied here. It means facing challenges with determination and rising above them gracefully, looking at situations from a positive perspective. When we confront difficulties head-on and persist despite the odds, we emerge from tough situations stronger and wiser. This equips us to handle life’s complexities better.

    Jack Abraham’s quote reminds us that adversity isn’t an insurmountable obstacle. It can spark creativity, personal growth, and new solutions. While navigating tough times is hard, believing they can lead to positive change strengthens our resilience. Simply by changing our perspective on a situation can have a major impact on the outcome and the people we become. By recognizing the potential for creativity within limitations and seeing opportunities in challenges, we empower ourselves to overcome obstacles and move towards brighter futures.

    • Jack Abraham’s quotation presents a powerful viewpoint on how hardship may foster creativity and promote human development. It’s a motivating viewpoint that problems force us to use our imaginations and come up with fresh ideas.
      But it’s also worthwhile to consider an alternative viewpoint. Adversity may not always result in good things happening, and there can be an excessive amount of pressure to always see the bright side of things. Certain situations are just challenging, and it’s acceptable to accept the hurt and struggle without trying to see the bright side right away.
      For certain people, the notion that adversity inherently fosters ingenuity and perseverance may not hold. Everybody handles stress differently, so while some people thrive under duress, others could find it difficult and require further assistance.
      This is about being very clear that there are times when people can also be resilient because of the support structures they have, through self-care, and learning to ask for help if needed.
      It brings us to a broader discussion: finding that place in which growth from adversity is balanced by the very real struggles that come along with it. How do we support one another in times of hardship? How can we create environments where people feel safe about sharing their difficulties without feeling as though they need to find a feel-good spin? This will give us a further understanding of resilience and personal growth in a far more multi-layered and inclusive way.
