A point of service plan, or POS, is an organization that pays for health care on behalf of individuals and groups, but requires individuals to choose a physician to be a point of service for ordering all health care services. A POS makes individuals responsible for more of their health care costs if they visit physicians and hospitals outside a preferred group. Under the University of Pennsylvania’s POS for employees, individuals generally pay twice as much for health care services when they visit non-preferred hospitals.
