Headline Inflation

Headline inflation is the name given to the rate at which the overall price level is rising. It is distinct from core inflation, which excludes volatile food and energy components. The oil price shocks of the 1970s drove headline inflation well above core, though both measures of inflation were relatively high, reflecting rapid increases in the cost of living at the time.
