A metropolitan area is an urban region that comprises a main city center, and all surrounding territories that are economically integrated with it. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the population of the city of Los Angeles was 3.8 million in 2010. The metropolitan area of Los Angeles, which also contains Santa Ana, Long Beach, Irvine, Anaheim and many other places, had a population more than three times as large: 12.8 million in 2010.
