Zoning

Zoning seeks to protect public health and welfare by regulating the use of land. For instance, most municipalities will prevent polluting industries from locating in residential areas. Zoning regulations also sometimes seek to protect the character of places. In Paris, France, building height is limited to about 80 feet. Some zoning regulations are highly contentious. Many rich American suburbs impose a large minimum lot size to prevent poor people from living there.
