Course Description

MGMT 0002: Principles of Entrepreneurial Management

Principles of Entrepreneurial Management is designed to provide students with an undergraduate-level entrepreneurship and innovation curriculum to prepare them for real-world entrepreneurial ventures. This course provides a foundational understanding of entrepreneurship, exploring the essential skills, mindset, and knowledge needed to start and grow a successful business. Topics includes idea generation, business planning, financing, marketing, and management. Learning activities include a mix of readings, discussions, and analysis of case studies on entrepreneurial decision-making.  

Learning Objectives

By the end of the course, students will: 

  1. Analyze common dilemmas faced by entrepreneurs.
  2. Apply decision-making frameworks to real-world business problems.
  3. Evaluate business opportunities and entrepreneurial strategies through case studies.
  4. Develop skills in leadership, team building, and stakeholder management.
  5. Understand key challenges in financing and scaling a startup.
  6. Engage with ethical and legal considerations in entrepreneurship.

 

About the Wharton Pre-baccalaureate Program

The Wharton Pre-baccalaureate Program is an academically-intensive opportunity for exceptional high school juniors and seniors to enroll in Wharton online courses. Participants will learn from Wharton instructors, earn a Wharton transcript, and accrue college credit for each course completed. With six sessions to choose from and built-in academic support, students are encouraged to explore the depth and breadth of Wharton’s business education curriculum with maximum flexibility and the guidance and resources to succeed.

This course is delivered via live synchronous class sessions, online assignments, online discussions, and readings. To be successful, you must actively engage with ideas presented in the course, and with those posed by your classmates.   

Assessment is based upon active course participation, readings, assignments, and a final exam.

Instructional Team

Instructor: Stefano Rumi

Headshot of a person in a brown blazer and tie, standing against a brick wall background.Stefano Rumi is a doctoral candidate at the Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania, and a former Adjunct Professor of Entrepreneurship at the Marshall School of Business. His research interests revolve around non-market strategy related to social and environmental impact, examining how a variety of actors, including entrepreneurs, traditional firms, and impact investors make decisions and navigate challenges related to social change. His research has been published in Journal of Small Business and Enterprise Development, the Stanford Social Innovation Review, and the DeGruyter Handbook of Social Entrepreneurship, among other outlets. Over the years, he has also advised several foundations and philanthropists on impact strategy related to a variety of social challenges. He holds a BA magna cum laude in sociology from the University of Virginia, where he studied as a Jefferson Scholar.
